The Importance of Labeling your Fermenters

If you have ever read my eBook or seen my homebrew posts, you may have seen how I label my fermenters. As you can see from the photo on the left, included on the sign is the name of the brew and the words "Not Meth" in parenthesis. Now it may seem obvious to some that I am not making meth, but there are those who are very confused with what a fermenter is and does.

The main reason I list the words "Not Meth" on my fermenter goes back to a news story from Winooski, VT. When police were responding to a domestic assault at an apartment complex, the police discovered what they thought to be a clandestine meth lab. The fire department and bomb squad were called in to "neutralize" the container with a "boiling" liquid in it.
The best part of this story is that the fire department took a class on identifying meth labs days before the incident. Good job Winooski Fire Department! You saved the town from dangerous homebrew! For all we know, they could have just moved the beer from the apartment to the fire house without anyone noticing to enjoy it for themselves. So in case my apartment ever gets raided, I don't want to experience the same fate that the homebrewer experienced in this story. Hopefully the law enforcement agents or fire department actually believes that I am telling the truth with my labels and doesn't bring in the bomb squad.

There are many other things I might also want to write on my fermenters. It's a good practice to keep track of what thing is in what fermenter, especially if you have multiple brews fermenting at the same time. People who you show off your setup to might want to know what is in the bucket/jug, and the best way they can find out is by looking at the label. Despite all I do to educate people on homebrewing, there are many who do not see the warning and assume a fermenting liquid is something it isn't.
